International scientists: “The condition of the whales is poor and declining”

More than 30 scientists from around the world who have experience with killer whales and beluga whales have offered their assistance in the rehabilitation of whales from whale jail.

A group of scientists sent an official letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which experts expressed serious concern about the health and condition of orcas and beluga whales in Srednyaya Bay.

Biologists and veterinarians have sent a document “Decline in Health of an Orca Held in Russian Whale Jail”, which was compiled on the basis of an analysis of photographs taken 42 days apart.

The letter states the following: “the health and wellbeing of this whale, and likely others, are deteriorating rapidly. Additionally, at least one orca and several white whales are reportedly missing and, although the captors claim these animals escaped the pens, given their young ages and their poor condition, we are concerned that they may actually have died.

Steps Should Be Taken Now to Improve the Health of These Animals and the Conditions of their Captivity.

We urge you to provide access for a team of Russian and international experts to enter the facility to evaluate and treat the whales and start the process of improving the captive facility.”

Scientists also noted that the successful release of whales is possible after rehabilitation.

The experts also expressed the hope that the Russian government would prevent future capture, citing this incident as an indicator of serious stress and high mortality, as well as damage to wild populations. Many of them have already expressed concern about the capture of killer whales in previous letters to the Russian authorities.

Despite the instructions of the president and loud statements by russian officials, public organizations and international experts have not yet been involved in the process of determining the fate of cetaceans.

The whole world has been watching this situation for months. Not only international scientists and specialists in marine mammals, but also celebrities from all over the world paid attention to the problem, and almost 1.5 million people from all over the world have already signed a petition demanding the release of whales. However, the fate of the whales remains unresolved and at the moment the decision is in the hands of two organizations that are directly related to the capture companies and support the captures.

How long will the authorities ignore public opinion? It depends on all of us! Keep writing letters to the president Putin! We must not be silent! Whales can not speak for themselves! We are their voice!
