Total allowable catch for orca won’t be set for 2020

On April 19, 2019 Sakhalin Environmental Watch received a letter from VNIRO via DHL in which the director of the institute’s research work, O. Bulatov, announced that a decision had been made to exclude killer whales from TAC for scientific and educational purposes for 2020!

The VNIRO letter was written in response to the appeal of Sakhalin Environmental Watch describing numerous violations when public fishery agencies conducted public discussions on materials of the total allowable catch (TAC) of marine mammals in 2020. This appeal can be seen in russian only on the EcoWatch website http://ecosakh.ru/…/obrashhenie-v-prokuraturu-po-odu-2020-g/

The decision to exclude orcas from TAC in 2020 is a big victory for the entire environmental movement in Russia! However, the plans of Russian Fisheries to capture belugas remain the same.

Last year Russian ecologists and scientists were able to achieve the rejection of TAC for 2019 for both orcas and belugas, therefore no orcas or belugas can be legally captured in 2019z

We believe that is necessary to ban the capture of marine mammals for entertainment purposes altogether. The only way to achieve this is to collect 100 thousand signatures on a petition on the Russian federal platform!
