ACTIVISTS FROM SAKHALIN CREATED INSTALLATION TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT WHALE JAIL

11 orca dorsal fins symbolize a pod of these amazing animals trying to find their way home. In 2018, 11 orca calves were captured in the Sea of Okhotsk for sale in Chinese aquariums. Now orcas and 87 belugas are kept in the “whale jail” in the Srednyaya bay in Primorsky Krai.

Orcas are amazing animals with a complex social structure that is close to human. Modern studies have proved the unique structure of the cetaceans brain: there are areas in it that are responsible for feelings and emotions that are much more developed than in humans. Killer whales pass on their knowledge and dialects from generation to generation.

Killer whale family ties are very strong. They are extremely difficult to tolerate separation from relatives and live much shorter lives in captivity. Even the most modern oceanariums will never be able to replace the sea for cetaceans.

The installation with 11 dorsal fins in a park are frozen in ice. This is not only raises awareness and brings attention to the fact that the “whale jail” is now covered with ice, and the animals in it are freezing. This is a parallel to the events of three years ago, when the whole world was waiting for news about the fate of family of killer whales, which were caught ice in the village of Starodubsky. People then stood all night in icy water, trying to bring the killer whales into the open water. And they succeeded .

Now orcas and belugas also need our help! They must be returned to their families as soon as the ice comes down. This requires the active position of the citizens of Russia and other countries.

The organizers of the installation “Ocean Friends”  and “Boomerang Club” are very grateful to the support of Department of Culture of the Administration of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and the Park of Culture of Yuri Gagarin.
